Bass Guitars ยท Guide

How to choose your first bass guitar

The best first bass is the one that's easy to play and stays in tune, so you practice instead of fighting it. Everything else is secondary in year one.

Start with feel, not features

Neck width and body weight decide whether you'll enjoy playing. If a bass is uncomfortable, no spec sheet will save it.

If you have smaller hands or come from guitar, a slimmer Jazz-style neck is often easier than a chunky Precision neck.

Set a realistic total budget

Remember the extras: a strap, cable, tuner, and a basic setup. Factor these in so the bass itself isn't your entire budget.

A well-set-up budget bass plays better than an expensive one with a bad setup.

Pick a tone direction

Fat and simple points to a P-style bass; bright and versatile points to a Jazz; punchy and modern points to a humbucker bass.

A PJ configuration hedges your bets by offering both classic voices.
