Flatwound vs roundwound bass strings
This is the single biggest tonal choice you make with strings. Rounds are bright and modern; flats are smooth and vintage.
Tone
Roundwounds are bright and articulate with more finger noise; flatwounds are warm, thumpy, and smooth — think Motown and reggae.
Feel and fret wear
Flats feel slick and are gentler on frets and fingers; rounds have more texture and can wear frets faster over years.
Which to choose
Pick rounds for versatility and slap; pick flats for a smooth, vintage thump and low maintenance.
